Some Facts about hunger
- In our world, one person dies of hunger-related causes every three seconds. This is 30,000 people every day.
- Of these 30,000, 16,000 are children (about 6 million children each year). This number is roughly equivalent to a 747 jet full of children crashing every 27 minutes.
- In developing countries, one child in ten dies before his or her fifth birthday, mainly from malnutrition or lack of clean water.
- More than 800 million people in the world are chronically undernourished. This is about 1 in every 7 people.
- In the United States, 12 million children live in households where there is not enough to eat.
- In the United States, one in every ten households lives with hunger.
- In New Jersey, the average wage-earner from a family of four making minimum wage would have to work 3 full-time jobs to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, child care, and medical coverage for themselves and their families.
What can you do?
Get involved in feeding programs in your community.
Regularly support the Two Cents a Meal offering.
Write to your federal and state representatives on important legislative issues surrounding hunger and poverty.
Work with Bread for the World and other advocacy organizations committed to influencing governmental policies in support of hungry people.
Practice lifestyle integrity through programs such as the Presbyterian Coffee Project and Sweat Free T's.
Support the work of the Presbyterian Hunger Program.
Increase your giving to the Peacemaking and One Great Hour of Sharing offerings.
Learn about hunger and poverty issues by reading as much as you can. Teach what you learn to others, especially our children!
